Psychology in the light of Islamic Teachings
For ages, Freudian psychoanalytic approaches have been widely in use in a large number of clinical settings. His innumerable contributions to the field of psychology including but not limited to navigating unconscious conflicts and five psychosexual stages have been read by every clinician and aspiring psychologist. However, with the spread of Islam as the second most followed religion, a lot of Muslim psychologists have been cynical about the use of these approaches in day to day quintessential clinical practice. A number of westernized approaches towards psychotherapy can be of great use but one must not compromise religious dignity and principles to ensure smooth running of a society.
إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍۢ سَلِيمٍۢ ٨٩
Only those who come before Allah with a pure heart ˹will be saved˺
Islamic psychological principles are meant to preserve the objectives of soul and society which are the religion (al-diny (ii) the life (al-nafsy, (iii) the intellect (al-‘aqly, (iv) the lineage (al-nasly, (v) the wealth (al-mdl). Psychology in its most primitive form aims to resolve human feelings and conflicts in the most peaceful way possible, which is also the core of Islamic law and principles. A believer who is mindful of blessings of Allah and sees signs of divine spiritual force in mundane things has reached the stage of ‘’Khushu’’ which literally means humbled attentiveness. This is what prompts a true believer to seek forgiveness from Allah when he commits a wrong doing and return to the path of faith and follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In Islamic Psychology, true success is when the soul claws it’s way up the ‘’ al-nafs al-ammarah bi al-su ’ (the badness-commanding soul)’’ and reaches al-nafs al-mutma ’innah (the tranquil soul).
It is of great importance that Islamic psychologists agree on the theories of Islamic psychology so that they can be utilized in the psychotherapeutic settings to a larger extent. In addition to this, the relevance and significance of neuropharmacology for intervention purposes must not be disregarded. Positivity and progress blossom with the guidance and blessing of Allah al-Alim (The Knowing), al-Hakim (The Wise). A society can reach great heights if people overcome the impulses to do evil things and deal with conflicting and resentful feelings with a different approach in the light of Islamic teachings.
